Happy Summer Feet!

Do you find yourself not wanting to wear your favorite sandals during this great summer weather? Well, you are not alone many of us get so busy we forget to take some time and care for our feet daily.

Make it fun and simply turn the living room or bedroom into a little spa.   It will not only soothe the feet, but sooth and restore the whole person inside.  There are some great products that are environmentally safe and much less toxic to the human system on the market these days.

Start with removing any old polish with a toxic free nail polish remover.  Some products to check out include:

  • Sun coat natural nail polish remover has no strong unfriendly fumes.
  • Peacekeeper Eco-Easy nail polish remover is for the vegan, and gently scented with rosemary.
  • Honeybee garden order less polish remover.  The drawback to this product is it contains methanol, which can be more toxic than acetone to some people.

Cut nails with a toenail clipper or scissors for toenails.  This will give the nail the correct shape to not cause ingrown toenails.  Take the time to smooth all sharp or rough edges with an emery board.  There is now bamboo and biodegradable easily emery boards on the market, to consider.

Give the feet a warm soothing bath in either a D-Tox Foot spa, which can be purchased from gaiam.com or a large bowl for your feet.  Warm the water and add to it lemon slices or any fresh herb that fits the mood.  Another idea is to add essential oils that can be easily found at Whole Foods, such as lavender, grapefruit or any other scent that is pleasing to the smell.

Scrub the feet after soaking them with olive oil and sea salt mixture made in your kitchen.   You can purchase a natural scrub, which can be found at a store such as Whole Foods.  Start by working in a circular motion, rinse them off in the warm water, and use a callus remover if needed.  This will prepare the feet for the next step in the natural home foot care.

Thoroughly knead into the bottom of the feet a natural moisture cream, such as Burt’s Bees, therapeutic foot crème or simply Carlson Natural Vitamin E oil.  Finish the whole foot rub by rubbing the thumb gently in a circular motion on each toe.  To keep all the moist on the feet, put on a pair of socks after applying for at least an hour.

For the last step in the natural pampering for the feet, polish the toenails with a natural nail polish without any toxins to go into the human system.  The key is to look for polishes that contain no phthalates, toluene or formaldehyde. There are two main brands on the market:

  • Sun coat nail polish, which is water based.  It available in 32 colors to fit whatever the mood for that day or week.
  • No- Miss nail polish, which comes in many colors including glitter polishes, which can be purchased at Whole Foods.

Taking these simple, but soothing steps will help the environment to stay just a little cleaner and safe for the future.
